Idumban Temple

The temple is open from 8.00 till 5.30 in the evening,The view from the temple is beautiful. Idumban Temple is located at Idumban Hill, at around 100 meters away from Palani temple. Since the time of Sage Agastya the Idumban Temple existed, according to belief. The place holds enormous significance in terms of ancient history of Palani. It is generally believed that the Sage Agastya ordered his demon assistant Idumban to take Sivagiri and Shaktigiri Hills to his abode in South India. Obeying his orders, Idumban bore slung across his shoulders, in the form of a Kavadi one on either side. After travelling some duration he placed the Kavadi near Palani to take rest. When Idumban resumed his journey, he was unable to lift the hill. By that time, God Muruga decided to test the devotion of Idumban toward Agastya. Thus, he made it impossible for Idumban to make it. Upon the hilltop, the great Asuran spotted a little boy wearing only kaupeenam and demanded that he vacate at once, so Idumban could proceed with his task. However, the boy refused, and following a fierce battle, Idumban was killed. However, Idumban was later on restored to life.

Thiruvaavinankudi Temple is also known by the name of Kulanthai Velayuthaswamy Temple. The temple is one of the oldest in the region and is believed to be the abode of Lord Murugan. The shrine, located at the foot of the hill Tiru Avinankudi, is one of the three Padai-Vîdu mentioned in songs and legend.
